The World Food Programme (WFP) is an international organization within the United Nations that provides food assistance worldwide.
It is the world's largest humanitarian organization and the leading provider of school meals. Founded in 1961, WFP is headquartered in Rome and has offices in 80 countries. As of 2021, it supported over 128 million people across more than 120 countries and territories.

In addition to emergency food relief, WFP offers technical and development assistance, such as building capacity for emergency preparedness and response, managing supply chains and logistics, promoting social safety programs, and strengthening resilience against climate change.
It also a major provider of direct cash assistance and medical supplies, and provides passenger services for humanitarian workers.

WFP is an executive member of the United Nations Sustainable Development Group, a consortium of UN entities that aims to fulfil the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), with a priority on achieving SDG 2 for "zero hunger" by 2030.

The World Food Programme was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2020 for its efforts to provide food assistance in areas of conflict, and to prevent the use of food as a weapon of war and conflict.

URGENT ANNOUNCEMENT
Global Report on Food Crises: 2024
23 April 2024
UN Secretary-General, António Guterres
Video Courtesy, United Nations - Global Network Against Food Crises
The latest Global Report on Food Crises is a roll call of human failings.

In a world of plenty, children are starving to death. Last year, almost 300 million people faced food crisis. The number of people on the cusp of famine doubled — to over 700,000.

Gaza has the highest number of people facing catastrophic hunger ever recorded by the Global Report on Food Crises. And conflict in Sudan has created the world’s largest internal displacement crisis. That means hunger and malnutrition for millions, particularly women and children.

The global food crisis requires an urgent global response. We must transform food systems. And the data in this report plays a vital role. So does finance.

Governments must boost funding for ending hunger: By putting our proposals for a Sustainable Development Goal Stimulus into action in support of developing countries and fully funding humanitarian operations. And they must follow-up on the Call to Action on Food Systems transformation.

With commitment and concerted action, we can create a world where hunger has no home.
Let’s get going — today.

WFP resumes operations in Sudan, amid full-blown humanitarian ‘catastrophe’
Courtesy, United Nations - WFP
The World Food Programme (WFP) has lifted a temporary suspension of operations in Sudan as fighting between rival military groups pushes millions into hunger, Executive Director Cindy McCain announced on Monday.

Ms. McCain said food distribution is expected to begin in four states - Gedaref, Gezira, Kassala and White Nile – in the coming days.
As the security situation is still highly precarious, WFP is considering locations where humanitarian access is assured, while also strongly taking security, capacity and access-related considerations into account.

“We will take utmost care to ensure the safety of all our staff and partners as we rush to meet the growing needs of the most vulnerable,” . . .

Ms. McCain underscored the need to end the fighting, noting that more than 15 million people were already facing severe food insecurity prior to the conflict.

She warned that numbers are expected to “grow significantly” as the unrest continues. “It is times like this that WFP and our UN partners are needed most,” she said.
